I Interrupt This Bloggy Break...

I just have to. Can't let this observation go by without commenting.

Are you watching the Olympics? I am. I love watching the determination and concentration of the faces of the athletes.

Friday night was the opening ceremony. Wow. Just, wow. The announcer said that several million dollars MORE was spent on this one ceremony that the one held in Athens. I have never seen anything like it. The commentator agreed he had never seen such an elaborate display and that Olympiadom would probably not see another like this in our lifetime.

Now, Beachy Mimi is all about bling, and more is MORE. I just couldn't enjoy it as much because I kept thinking of all the earthquake sufferers still there and all the people that are starving and suffocating-cough, cough,-in the pollution.

The unison of their movements were precise as anything I've ever seen. If they had messed up, would they have disappeared forever? I know the people have a tremendous amount of pride for their culture and country. But the lost souls? It just breaks my heart.

Today I've watched beach volleyball, let's just say I'd have issues with the sand in my suit, a big bicycle race and swimming.

Swimming makes me so hungry...even if someone else is doing it. I'm going for a snack now.

More Olympic Updates, later, Peeps.

*UPDATE*
I love the Olympics and thought the Chinese did a fantastic job. I do hope that the Olympics will open and help their country.

It was a beautiful thing...but dampened by the earthquake, pollution, and peoples' loss of homes just for the 'birdsnest'...hmmm I do LOVE the Olympics though.

The opening ceremonies were outstanding. I couldn't believe that so many people were involved. Those woman who cheered as all 204 nations entered the stadium? I was exhausted just watching them after 30 minutes. It lasted, what, 2 hours? China should be very proud of itself and it's people today. There are problems there and maybe the Olympic spotlight will help those in need there.

Oh I thought it was magnificent...and if I should ever win the lottery (and "seeing as how" we play maybe twice a year..my chances are zero) I would go to every opening and closing ceremony for the rest of my life! It was amazing, period.

I, too, thought about the earthquake victims. And then I thought about the people in the factories that make the "stuff" I buy. As in a pretty pretty quilt I just bought at T J Maxx...I feel these little guilty twinges but I keep buying..so what does that say about me? Not so good.

And the ceremonies only reinforced my lack of knowledge about other countries. Ouch...I am seriously geographically-challenged.

It's a topic we talk about often in our house, as I'm sure you can imagine. I know that we definitely separate out the Chinese people from the Chinese government, as I know many Americans also hope for from the international community.

Way back in 2005, we visited the hutong neighborhood where the Birds Nest is now located. What a loss of history.
